Amulet: The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi

This is a fun graphic novel centering on a girl who inherits from her grandfather a magic amulet that gives her the power to rule the world, but all she wants is to save her mom. The story is exciting without being too scary. The father dies in a car crash in the opening pages. Emily and younger brother Navin have a nice, caring relationship. Features robots, bad guys, a talking stuffed bunny, and an awesome house on a cliff that stands and walks across the sea. There are five books in the series (#6 comes out in August 2014). Amazon ...

Zita is a brave and impetuous main character who goes into space to rescue a friend. She makes allies and fights enemies and succeeds at the end, but only by sacrificing herself. It’s a little scary and a little sad in parts, but not overwhelmingly so on either count, and the drawings are really fun. There’s a sequel, as well. Amazon...
